Our Values

Communities for Sensible Schools in 2023:

Prepare

Mission

Provide a solid education for all students in the Hillsboro School District by prioritizing academic excellence, increasing transparency in curriculum, and respecting parents’ authority regarding children’s physical and emotional health while finding ways to collaborate with teachers and parents.

Focus on Academics

  • Prioritize the basics of reading, math and writing to catch students up on 2 years of learning loss, including adding in science-based reading curriculum (phonics).
  • Dedicate more resources to educating students and increasing academic rigor by streamlining the business of education.
  • Expand honors/accelerated courses, maintain AP/IB programs, and implement vocational training programs to give all students the pace and depth they need.

Increase Transparency in Curriculum

  • Make curriculum and instructional/supportive materials available online for parents to access anytime.
  • Increase communication with parents to ensure they understand the curriculum and create an opt-in process to replace current opt-out processes.
  • Regularly update and share learning objectives and assessments for each unit/module to give students and parents a clear understanding of what is expected and how progress will be measured.

Collaborate with Teachers and Parents

  • Decrease class sizes to improve student-teacher interaction.
  • Provide teachers with the tools and support they need to work with behavioral problems and run successful classrooms.
  • Allow parents to take a larger role in their child’s education by giving them ways to help and engaging them in classroom and after school activities.
